Full Description Deck Coating Project in Scottsdale, AZ
The home already had a beautiful walkdeck adding some unique flair and luxurious living space to the backyard, but they wanted to put in a waterproof deck material and coating to keep it looking fresh and being functional for years to come.
With over 25 years of deck and roofing experience, Estrella Roofing was the natural fit for this project. We specialize in restoring, installing and coating decks of all kinds.
What Makes A Walk Deck Different From Your Regular Deck?
Walk decks are a little different form your typical backyard deck, but are really just constructions made of wood, concrete or plastic with a waterproof seamless non-skid coating that keeps it safe and sturdy for foot traffic.
Walk Decks are often found on the home’s roof – where they’re commonly called a roofdeck. But they can also be found as an extension at ground level – or a totally separate structure from the home itself.
A raised walkdeck can turn an otherwise small, barren or uninviting backyard into a comfortable, spacious and inviting place perfect for having barbecues, throwing parties or just lounging around after a hard day’s work. Add some cozy patio furniture and a firepit, if you can, and you’re ready to go.
Walkdecks need waterproof coatings. These usually come in three kinds: a rubber coating, which is the least expensive and easiest to apply (but will need to be reapplied every few years); cementitious coating, which is very common here in Arizona and is cheap, easy to apply and durable; and fiberglass, the most expensive of the three but also the most reliable.
The Process – The PliDek Coating System and How We Applied the It
For this project, Estrella Roofing installed a Pli-Dek Coating System over the current plywood substrate. Pli-Dek is a trusted brand, having been around since 1980, and this System is designed for exposed surfaces that see high foot traffic – think walkways and terraces, in addition to walkdecks.
The Pli-Dek Coating System uses three coats; a 2.5 galvanized metal lath, followed by an intermediate coast of polyacrylic or fiberglass, with a variety of finishing options – including brick and stone finishes.
For this classy Scottsdale home, we finished the walk deck off with a sand finish, which gave it a smooth, clean and natural look.
The Pli-Dek Coating System was chosen over other roof coating systems for a number of reasons. First, it’s ICC-ES evaluated, 1-Hour Fire Rated, as well as Class A Fire rated. It’s also ADA approved. It’s very cost-effective and relatively easy to install, with a very fast drying time. It’s also very low maintenance and has a high UV Resistance – essential for installing in a Valley of the Sun home.
Newly Coated Deck
The project went off without a hitch, and the homeowners were soon enjoying their new waterproofed, Pli-Deck coated walkdeck. It’ll last them a lifetime of good times to come.
